Torreira will change

According to coinciding reports in the Spanish media, Arsenal has activated the release clause for Thomas (27) of Atlético de Madrid. Consequently, the 50 million euros necessary for this were deposited in the Spanish LaLiga on Monday morning, the usual procedure for this type of transfers. This transfer would make the Ghanaian midfielder the most expensive transfer on this deadline.

Update 00:04 am: A few minutes before the end of the transfer period, Atlético officially confirmed Arsenal’s payment to LaLiga. According to the press release, the LaLiga club received confirmation at 11:28 pm that the “Gunners” now hold the player’s rights.

In return, as expected, Lucas Torreira (24) joins the “Colchoneros”. The Uruguayan is initially on loan for one year.

With this, coach Mikel Arteta would gain the access of his dreams after months of transfer poker. The Gunners had been working on the move since July, but Atlético vehemently insisted on paying the clause, successfully. In Madrid, one should be less than excited about the timing of the change, getting an equivalent replacement midway is practically impossible.

Special agreement expands the transfer window of Atlético de Madrid

For this reason, LaLiga has a procedure for clubs, from which a player is taken away by a clause shortly before the transfer deadline. If Thomas approves his medical review and the change is made, Atlético would have 30 days to provide a replacement.

However, there is a downside: the “Colchoneros” can only use LaLiga competitors who, in turn, could only replace on January 1 and the substitute probably could not be used in the Champions League, since the squad of the “main class” must be reported on October 6.

Atlético are not entirely empty-handed, however, because Lucas Torreira (24), who also plays in the defensive midfield, will likely go from the Gunners to Atlético on loan.
