On April 18, 1999, Wayne Gretzky played his last game at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Wayne Gretzky couldn’t stop the tears. He had asked that his farewell be a party and not a funeral.
Gretzky’s departure was held at Madison Square Garden in New York. Even the hymn was rewritten that night: Bryan Adams sang it and changed the last line from “Oh Canada” to “We will miss you Wayne.”
Four rounds of honor
Gretzky, the best ice hockey player in history, as he is commonly known, received the farewell party he deserved. “I have been playing ice hockey since I was three years old. I love this game. It almost killed me not to play anymore. But my decision, the toughest in my life, is correct and indisputable, “The Great One,” who later maintained 61 NHL records, told 18,200 spectators at the stadium.
Four rounds of honor followed, cheers that lasted minutes, a smile and many tears. Gary Bettman, an NHL commissioner at the time, said: “If you take this shirt off, no one will ever wear number 99 again.”
