FC Aarau kick off the new year as the Challenge League season began last September with a 1: 3 loss to FC Wil. It was the expected game at Bergholz: Aarau were mostly in possession of the ball and tried to play on the artificial surface to achieve success while the hosts waited for their chance. And coach Alex Frei’s protégés cooled down for the first time in the 13th minute: after a corner kick from the right side, returning Wiler Silvio hit the far post to give the hosts the lead.

As a result, FC Aarau only rarely managed to get into a dangerous final position despite many combinations; instead, choosing head coach Stephan Keller made his life more difficult. Shortly after the start of the second half, Maren Haile-Selassie rose to 2-0 for the home heroes following a replay error by Léon Bergsma. And after an hour of play, the same player received a foul penalty thanks to his follow-up (following the intervention of Raoul Giger), which was converted safely by captain Philipp Muntwiler.

The follow-up hit comes too late

Only in the last minute did Aarau rebel against impending defeat, which was rewarded with the consolation goal of Kevin Spadanuda (82nd), who had previously been substituted. There were still more chances for an exciting final phase, but the 3-1 loss in the cold mountain forest ultimately changed nothing. FC Aarau will continue their season next Friday (8pm) with a guest appearance on league leader Grasshopper Club Zurich.
