A posted video shocks America on Christmas Eve! Back in the United States it is a fatal police operation against an African American. Footage from an officer’s body camera, released Thursday, shows him killing 47-year-old Andre Hill with multiple shots in the garage of a home in Columbus, Ohio.
The footage shows Hill approaching police officer Adam Coy Monday night. He has a cell phone in his left hand, his right hand is not seen. A few seconds: Coy fires several shots, Hill collapses. Police had previously been called to the scene for a minor incident. According to media reports, it was about a man who was sitting in a car and was repeatedly turning it on and off.
It is unclear why the police officer fired on Monday night. The officers who were called to the incident did not actually have their body cameras turned on. But according to “Reuters”, the authorities managed to make the recordings thanks to a 60-second review. Therefore, the video has no sound. One thing is clear: Hill did not have a weapon with him. According to local media, allegations about the disproportionate use of force against police officer Adam Coy are said to have been received.
Mayor: “A disregard for life”
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther (45) was visibly emotional at a press conference and was outraged by the incident. “I’ve never seen camera footage like this before. Literally without any attempt to resurrect this crimeless man who was dying. That is an impressive disregard for life, and in this case black life. “
In response to the incident, Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan announced the release of Police Officer Adam Coy on Christmas Eve. “It is Christmas Eve. Andre Hill’s family has nothing to celebrate this holiday. A Columbus police officer is responsible, ”he wrote on Twitter.
Once again, police officers saw a black man and concluded that he was a criminal and dangerous, attorney Ben Crump, who represents several families of victims of police violence, said of Hill’s death.
It is the second case of police violence in Columbus in weeks. In early December, 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr. was shot and killed by a police officer as he returned home to the city. According to his family, he was holding a sandwich that the officer thought was a firearm.
George Floyd’s death sparked protests across the country
After the death of Andrew Hill († 47), hundreds of people took to the streets in Columbus and demonstrated peacefully. On Christmas Eve, the dead were remembered with a minute of silence. Candles were lit in the place.
Last year there were months of nationwide protests against excessive violence and racism in the United States. The demonstrations were sparked by the death of unarmed African-American George Floyd († 46) in a police raid in late May in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Apart from the mostly peaceful protests, there were repeated riots.
