Shortly before noon, the Uri canton police received notification of an avalanche in the Steintäler area in Unteralptal in Andermatt on Tuesday, as stated. A group of four freeriders from France descended from Gemsstock. Suddenly, a slab of snow fell off for reasons that were yet to be explained. As a result, three people slid down the slope in the avalanche.
One person was slightly injured and Rega flew her to Uri Cantonal Hospital. The other two people were completely buried. Any help came too late for them.
One of those fatally injured is Julie Pomagalski, 40. The former professional snowboarder made a living from the sport until 2007. Her greatest success was the gold medal in snowboard cross at the 1999 World Cup in Berchtesgaden.
It is with great sadness that we report that Méribel’s two-time Olympian Julie Pomagalski was killed yesterday in an avalanche in Switzerland. RIP Julie. pic.twitter.com/cpNw01x0k1
