Election day is payday, they say, and this was confirmed in Schaffhausen on Sunday: FDP government adviser Christian Amsler has to relinquish his government post. His SP challenger, Patrick Strasser, got more than 4,600 more votes. For the FDP man Amsler, the vote is a debacle. Two years ago, Amsler wanted to succeed Johann Schneider-Ammann on the Federal Council.

Two issues cost him reelection

The background for the removal of Amsler are two open issues in the canton. The setting for the first was the school’s dental clinic in Schaffhausen. There it emerged that the clinic’s doctors had transferred the students to a private practice for years. Two months before the elections, a parliamentary inquiry commission concluded that the government had not supervised the clinic. Above all, the director of education Amsler, who is responsible for the school’s dental clinic.

Amsler made more negative headlines with a dispute over the Schaffhausen Vocational Training Center (BBZ). In May 2019, the governing council removed the school’s principal, Ernst Schläpfer, known as the former king of wrestling. The dismissal was the culmination of a conflict that had simmered for months between Rector Schläpfer and Director of Education Amsler. Schläpfer had accused Amsler of repeatedly violating the legal system. He was fired on charges of disloyalty and disrespect.

Debate in the elections to the Council of States

Christian Amsler’s defeat on Sunday is therefore not entirely surprising. As early as fall 2019 it became clear that Amsler, who from 2013 to 2016 as chair of the German-speaking Switzerland Education Conference, had also received national attention, had lost a lot of popular support. Following the failed candidacy for the Federal Council, Amsler made another attempt to jump to Bern in the federal elections. He ran for the Council of States and suffered a setback on Election Day.

Amsler wants to retire from politics after Sunday’s loss. In a message on his personal website, he wrote: “Starting in January 2021, politician Christian Amsler will be history. I will change to new paths. “
