On Tuesday afternoon, a young American woman fell into the mountains above Lake Brienz and slid several hundred meters down a slope. Severely injured, the 20-year-old was rescued and airlifted to hospital, where she died shortly afterward.
As the Bernese Oberland prosecutor’s office and the Bern Canton police announced on Wednesday, the young woman was traveling in a group. These six mountaineers were getting off the bladder lift. This is a mountain on the Augstmatthorn chain between Harder and Brienzer Rothorn.
After her fall, two companions followed the slipped woman and were able to locate her. At the same time, the so-called rescue helicopters arrived at the scene. Rescuers immediately began emergency medical measures.
The police of the canton of Bern have launched investigations to clarify the exact course of the accident.
