Fabienne Schlumpf makes a bespoke debut: the Zurich rider sets the fastest time in Switzerland at 42.195 km in 2:26:14 hours and meets the Tokyo criteria.

Fabienne Schlumpf crossed the finish line in the Belp marathon after a remarkable 2:26:14 hours. During her baptism of fire at this distance, the 30-year-old killed two birds with one stone:

  • The European Championship runner-up in steeple and cross improved Maja Neuenschwander’s 2015 national record by just over half a minute.
  • The real goal, qualification for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, was met with aplomb. The default value for participation in the Summer Games was set at 2:29:30.

14 days after proving his fitness with a Swiss half marathon record in 1:08:27 in Dresden, Schlumpf also impressed by double distance across the board. He ran a regular race in cool, windy conditions and divided the power perfectly.

Aimed at a record and improved

“It was fun from the first to the last meter. I was able to enjoy it, even if it got tough towards the end, ”said the Zurich woman after the race. At first there was a bit of uncertainty before the 1st marathon, “but that’s normal, there must be a bit of nervousness.”

The fact that it set a new Swiss record at its premiere is “mega cool! It was not a secret that I looked at it a little beforehand, it worked much better, ”said Schlumpf happily. The high-altitude runner now holds four important records in the elite category: more than 3,000 m bell tower in the stadium and more than 10 km on the road, in the half marathon and more than 42,195 km.

Lehmann lost the Olympic limits

Meanwhile, Adrian Lehmann narrowly failed due to his ambitious plan. The LV Langenthal runner missed the Olympic limit of 2:11:30 hours for one minute. However, the 2016 European champion lowered his personal best in the half marathon from 2:15:08 in 2015 to 2:12:34.

Swiss Athletics implemented the project of a marathon in Belp to offer national and foreign runners the opportunity to attack the limits of the Olympic Games. Three weeks ago the race was postponed to Easter Saturday on short notice due to bad weather.
