Now Austrian ski legend Thomas Sykora has to apologize to Semyel Bissig! Why? In his role as co-commentator for the ORF, Sykora had marked the qualification for the final of the parallel giant slalom before 22-year-old Nidwalden began. “This ranking has been decided, no one will make it to the top 16.”
But then Bissig punishes the man with nine slalom World Cup victories with a fantastic run and the seventh fastest time. The 52-year-old man immediately forgives the young Swiss. I’m sorry, I completely forgot about Semyel. With him, another great Swiss talent approaches us. “
He almost ran into his mother
At times, there was some indication that this great talent would stumble upon his own mother. Semyel has always emulated his great role model, Marcel Hirscher. And like the eight-time Austrian World Cup winner, the boy from the Beckenried-Klewenalp Ski Club wanted to conquer the top of the world in a particularly familiar way. While Hirscher was trained by his father Ferdinand, Bissig, like his older sister Carole (24), has trained almost exclusively with his mother Petra since he was six years old.
But because Petra Bissig never received acceptance on Swiss Ski like Hirscher “Ferdl” did at the Austrian Ski Association, there was a first scandal before the 2016 Youth Olympics. At that point, Semyel decided not traveling to Norway because the association did not want to give her mother a caregiver accreditation.
“I haven’t seen Semyel’s mother in two years.”
In the meantime, however, Semyel has separated from his mother as a racing driver and has integrated perfectly into the Swiss ski team. “I haven’t seen Semyel’s mother in two years,” says male head coach Tom Stauffer.
After Semyel failed to score any points in his previous three World Cup appearances, the vicious Swiss center-back can be expected to achieve a superior position after this impressive performance in the standings. Besides Bissig, Gino Caviezel in twelfth place at the Arlberg also qualified for the 16th final.
