It has been a long time. Since early March 2014 in Kvitfjell (No), Beat Feuz (33) has not been without World Cup points in any race in which he crossed the finish line. The time has come on Tuesday. With start number 19, the Emmentaler never really gets going on the Stelvio. In the end, only 33rd place remains, three seconds behind American winner Ryan Cochran-Siegle. But Feuz is not deterred from his path, which is supposed to bring him the fourth crystal ball for the descent.
Anyway, the Super-G has never been his love. Unlike the descent, he is not prepared to push himself to the limit in the Super-G, Kugelblitz has stressed on several occasions. Especially when, as now in Bormio, his supreme discipline does not continue until the second day of the race today. Feuz prefers to focus on making sure his skis and boots are suitable for the descent.
Still, a difficult task awaits the Stelvio today. After finishing sixth in Val d’Isère and third in Val Gardena, Beat wants to go one step further. And it won’t be easy for our man downhill. Not even now, as Dominik Paris, five-time relegation king of Stelvio, continues to seek self-confidence after his cruciate ligament tear.
In addition to Feuz, Ryan Cochran-Siegle, who was twice the fastest in practice and yesterday’s Super-G winner, is eager to continue riding the wave of success.
And then the competition lurks from your own Swiss ski warehouse. Led by Mauro Caviezel (Super-G-5th), Urs Kryenbühl (8th), Marco Odermatt (9th), Gino Caviezel (11th) and Loïc Meillard (13th), five Swiss were among the top 15 in yesterday’s Super G.
Kryenbühl with additional wings
And one of them is particularly hot. Schwyz’s Urs Kryenbühl (25) finally knows how to pick up the pace at the Stelvio. A year ago he took the podium in the second Bormio descent behind the winner Paris, even just ahead of Feuz. And with third place in the speed start in Val d’Isère, Kryenbühl already showed in mid-December that he has advanced further. His makeover from skiing to fast Fischer slats gives Kryenbühl additional wings on top of his career-best Super-G result yesterday.
But how can Kryenbühl and Feuz grab this high-flying Cochran-Siegle from the US? The 28-year-old is in dream form. And along the way, he also benefited from Corona. Like the Swiss in Zermatt and Saas-Fee, the Americans had ideal training conditions at Copper Mountain in the fall. And unlike in other years, hardly any other team has traveled to Mecca in Colorado to prepare for the season. Exception: the Germans. And like Super G-7. Romed Baumann showed at the Diensteag what Copper Mountain brings.
