An anonymous FC Basel player tested positive for the corona virus on Saturday night. “After consulting with the canton’s medical service, the entire first team, including the staff, will immediately go into quarantine, because the player participated in the team’s training,” said the FCB.
As a result, the classic FC Zurich versus FC Basel cannot be played today from 4pm. Since the canton doctor has quarantined all Basel players, the game will be postponed in accordance with the Swiss Football League (SFL) crown concept.
It is not yet known how long the instructions from the canton doctor Thomas Steffen will take. According to “bz Basel”, he quarantined “much of the first team” for ten days. This could mean that FCB’s next match against Lausanne on October 25 will be postponed.
However, the decision also depends on how many Basel players cannot play Lausanne. In accordance with the Swiss Football League (SFL) protection concept, clubs can request a match postponement if more than six of their players are in quarantine or in isolation.
However, SFL management must decide whether to accept this request. Theoretically, it could also happen that the FCB have to play against Lausanne, although more than six players remain in quarantine.
New date in early November?
It is not yet clear when the match between FCZ and FCB will be rescheduled. The earliest possible dates would be Tuesday through Thursday, October 27-29. A postponement to November 4-5 seems more likely. So there is already a game day scheduled for the Challenge League.
Zurich against Basel is the first postponement of the current season in the Super League. Unlike the tight schedule at the end of last season, the league still has plenty of alternate dates. The Super League is free to play six times during the week until the end of December. And because with the Young Boys only one Swiss representative qualified for the Europa League, the European Cup dates hardly preclude new appointments.
The pandemic hits the classic for the second time in three months. There was already a Corona case in July before the match in Basel, in the FCZ. Mirlind Kryeziu had tested positive, a large part of Zurich residents had to go into quarantine.
