About a month after the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut, rescuers may have evidence of another survivor. Lebanese broadcaster Al-Jadid reported Thursday that a Chilean rescue team and their search dog found a sign of life under the rubble of a collapsed house. A total of two bodies were identified.
Beirut Governor Marwan Abbud told the German press agency that there may be a survivor. Search work continued after dark.
Dangerous salvage work
At night, headlights illuminated the place where the three-story building had collapsed in the Jemmeiseh district. Rescuers tried to reach the victims from above. A Lebanese Civil Defense official said they tried to cut a hole in the rubble.
The work is dangerous because the walls that are still standing are weak and could collapse. The building is only a few hundred meters from the scene of the explosion.
