Again, in Seedorf, a second avalanche thunders in the valley.

There is an increased risk of avalanches throughout the canton of Uri. Rightly so: on Friday masses of snow made their way back onto the road in Seedorf. The fire brigade filmed live.

The scenes in the video are impressive – tons of snow falling from the mountain. They tear up everything that gets in their way: bushes, trees, and street signs. Even a huge flagpole bends under enormous pressure like a matchstick.

Masses of snow made their way down the valley. Under the enormous pressure, whatever was in the way was swept away.

The second avalanche in Seedorf occurred on Friday morning at 8:30 am on the cantonal road. Exactly where the road was spilled on Thursday night. Since then, the villages of Uri de Bauen and Isenthal have been cut off from traffic. For safety reasons, the street is closed to vehicles and pedestrians. The Seedorf fire department is on site and makes sure that no one enters the risk area.

Vice Commander Bernhard Riesen made the video of the avalanche, which the locals know as “Fischlaui”. Most of them would have quickly escaped instead. But he filmed without blinking. “I worked for the Saas-Fee piste service for about 15 years,” he says and knows: “An avalanche of wet snow is slow. You can see them coming. “The situation should not be underestimated.” The violence is very great.

The calm in person: the deputy commander of the firefighters, Bernhard Riesen, filmed the second avalanche. He was there and secured the blocked path.

Like Thursday, no one was injured on the second staircase. The canton specialists and the fire brigade were ready anyway. “We assumed another avalanche would come,” Riesen said. It rained and snowed a lot on Thursday night. And the precipitation continues on Friday as well. Riesen is glad that the road was closed: “We were right in our assessment.” In hindsight, it is now clear that this precaution was absolutely appropriate. The Uri police warn the entire canton of the high risk of avalanches.

The situation in Seedorf will be reassessed by specialists this afternoon.

Updates on the situation in Uri will follow …
