In the Tour de France, the British racing team was the big loser. The change of course has now been achieved at the Giro.
3 weeks ago in Milan, no one expected Tao Geoghegan Hart to be on the top of the podium. This is not surprising, as the London native was not destined for the podium.
As a helper, he should have led Geraint Thomas through Italy as unscathed as possible. But already after the third stage, in which a bottle of water had brought down the captain of the Ineos, the British plans were wasted.
Boy on the starting blocks
The failure of the 2018 Tour de France winner forced Ineos to reschedule, and 25-year-old Geoghegan Hart jumped into the gap. In addition to the pink jersey, Ineos also captured 7 daily victories, 4 of which went to Filippo Ganna alone. Even the Italian is still part of the young guild at the age of 24.
«The generational change is complete. The youngest are stronger than me ”, was the conclusion of Vincenzo Nibali. The two-time Giro winner finished the tour in seventh place. According to his coach Paolo Slong, the almost 36-year-old Italian had the same values as the previous year, at that time the 2nd place was enough for him. Now it wasn’t enough for a podium or to win a stage.
Who will hit in the Vuelta?
In view of the highly compressed and Crown-shaped season, it would be too hasty to speak of a definitive changing of the guard by the boys. But the fact that they were there as soon as the opportunity arose speaks for them. And perhaps also for the required part of carefreeness, which seems more in demand than ever in this extraordinary season.
Thanks to Geoghegan Hart, but also strong assistants like Rohan Dennis or time trial specialist Ganna, Ineos has regained his former strength after an extremely disappointing Tour de France. But don’t forget that with Jumbo-Visma at the Giro, the dominant team from this year’s Tour de France have retired after several crown cases.
The British are currently proving at the Vuelta that Ineos can keep up with the Dutch team around Primoz Roglic. With last year’s Giro winner Richard Carapaz, an Ineos pro took over the leader’s jersey on Sunday. The road to Madrid is still long. Ineos has already successfully completed the rehabilitation in Milan.
