Now a man 20 years older is in command of the canton police, and ideally for a little longer: Stephan Grieder, currently head of the cantonal criminal police and intelligence service in the canton of Schwyz, has been elected the new commander of the Nidwalden Canton Police. The governing council announced this on Wednesday.
Grieder studied law at the University of Bern and is admitted to the Bern Bar Association. He has been an employee of the Schwyz canton police for 19 years and is also a member of the police command there.
Early employment is currently being negotiated
However, it could still be six months before he takes office. This should take place no later than April 1. Whether Grieder could move to Nidwalden before this date depends on his current employer, Karin Kayser says on request. “The canton of Schwyz also has its notice deadlines that must be met.” Negotiations with Schwyz are currently underway. Until Grieder begins her new job, Reto Berchtold will continue to lead the Nidwalden police force on an interim basis.
And how can you ensure that Grieder stays longer than his predecessor? “Of course, you can never guarantee that someone will stay for a certain period of time,” says Kayser. But Grieder was chosen after an intensive and careful selection process.
“I am convinced that this will mean that there will be more calm in the body.”
Kayser says they didn’t consciously trust an older person to replace von Gunten, who was 36 when he took office. “We had very different candidates of different ages. But it certainly doesn’t hurt if someone has some experience. “
Reorganization accepted
The body is also happy with the announcement of the elections. “I was in the report today and informed the police about our selection. You are very happy that a new commander is coming. “The long-planned reorganization of the Security Directorate is accepted, which also brings with it a more modern orientation of police tasks. By the time he took office, Grieder would also be moving closer to his new workplace, Kayser says. “There is no obligation to reside with us, but of course an application for residence.” Grieder is single and currently lives in the canton of Schwyz.
Stephan Grieder is an “enthusiastic athlete”
As part of his work in the Schwyz cantonal police, Stephan Grieder has already worked in various task forces across Switzerland, in the police management team and in several internal cantons. He completed his training as a police officer at the Swiss Police Institute in Neuchâtel. In addition to his experience in police leadership, Grieder also has experience in the military environment. He is a Colonel of the General Staff and is the Chief of Staff of the Territorial Division 2 since 2019. In his spare time he is an “enthusiastic athlete”.
