After Sunrise and Swisscom, Salt has also activated the 5G network

After Sunrise and Swisscom, Salt has now also put the new 5G cellular generation into operation. Switzerland’s third-largest mobile operator activated 5G in August, Salt boss Pascal Grieder said in an interview with the AWP news agency on Wednesday.

Salt’s chief was unable to quantify population coverage. “We are constantly expanding 5G,” Grieder said. This is the fast variant of 5G at the 3.5 gigahertz frequencies. The 700 megahertz variant will also be put into operation, Grieder said. This offers a longer range and better coverage in homes, but the browsing speed is lower.

Sunrise and Swisscom had already activated the new ultra-fast technology in the spring of 2019. However, after a lightning start in expansion, they were held back by the 5G moratorium in several cantons and resistance from the authorities and the population.

Also, not many 5G smartphones that would be a blockbuster have come on the market. This is likely to change with the new iPhone 12, in which Apple is installing the new cellular standard for the first time. Grieder said that 5G hype is now increasing. (sda / awp)

Swisscom’s 5G antennas, which have been in operation since Wednesday, are still transmitting on 4G + frequencies for the time being. 5G will go live in 102 locations in 54 locations such as Zurich, Bern, Basel, Geneva and Lausanne …
