Ciriaco Sforza’s team defeated Sion 3-2 on the road. The Valais are too late.
- FCB returned to success on matchday 16 of the Super League in Sion.
- Ciriaco Sforza’s team wins the tourbillon 3-2.
- After a sovereign first half, Basel loosens up and has to shake about 3 points at the end.
“We have talked a lot, now we have to deliver on the field,” Valentin Stocker had declared in the run-up to the guest performance at Sion. After the 1: 4 slap against FCZ last Saturday, a reaction was needed. And it came.
After only half an hour, the “Bebbi” were two lengths ahead. Captain Stocker set up Tim Klose’s header (15th) from a corner. Ten minutes later, former Sion player Pajtim Kasami also came up after a corner kick and also headed in.
Basel false start without consequences
Until Basel’s first goal, there was little to suggest a pleasant evening for the Ciriaco Sforza team: in the first quarter of an hour, Valais acted much more decisively and created some scoring opportunities; Yamato Wakatsuki awarded the best prize after about 130 seconds. The guests, however, seemed to be in shock after the applause at the classic.
Karlen regains tension
With every minute played, and the two goals behind them, FCB seemed bolder and more convincing. But after Ricky van Wolfswinkel in the post (56th) and Zhegrova (66th) failed completely alone against Sion goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, Valais smelled a wick again.
A double by Gaëtan Karlen (77./83.) – Van Wolfswinkel had made it 3-1 for Basel in the 79th minute – rekindled the hopes of Fabio Grosso’s side. But the Basler held firm behind, brought the 3 points with oh and no noise.
Once again, Basel lived up to its reputation as Zion’s fearsome opponent. Of the last 58 Super League matches, Valais only won 5.
So it goes
Sion will be a guest at the Bern Young Boys next Sunday (4pm). FC Basel host Lugano at the same time in SRF’s live game.
