President-elect Donald Trump wants to appear today at a rally by his supporters in Washington. Trump announced on Twitter that he would deliver a speech at the rally. He expressed the expectation that “a great number” would gather for the rally. Trump’s speech is expected at 11 am local time (5 pm CET).
Thousands of Trump supporters had already gathered in the US capital on Tuesday to protest against the formal confirmation of their electoral defeat against future President Joe Biden. Today the House of Representatives and the Senate will certify the result of the November 3 elections. Trump, however, tirelessly claims, without presenting any evidence, that there was massive fraud in the elections. In recent weeks, the courts have thrown out dozens of challenges to Biden’s victory by his group.
Trump had already urged supporters to protest against the certification of Biden’s election victory by Congress in December and predicted a “wild” day in Washington. Police fear the protests will provoke outbreaks of violence. In downtown Washington, many business owners boarded up their windows. Right-wing groups such as the Proud Boys, who are seen as willing to use violence, have also announced their participation in the demonstrations in Washington.
“My Commander-in-Chief has called me, and my God and Savior have given me instructions,” said Debbie Lusk, a Trump supporter with the AFP news agency, who traveled from the West Coast city of Seattle. “Either we are taking our country back or it will disappear,” added the 66-year-old retired accountant.
Chris Thomas, 69, from the coastal state of Oregon, said she and her husband did not believe in the outcome of the presidential election. They traveled to the other side of the country because they believed “in the freedom of the United States” and wanted to show their support for Trump’s economic policy.
According to a December poll, more than half of Republican voters believe Trump’s fraud allegations – or at least believe that the election results are unclear.
Most of the protesters did not wear masks despite the high number of corona infections. Many questioned the scientific evidence for the pandemic, which has killed more than 355,000 people in the United States. (sda / afp)
