Studies show that if Sars-CoV-2 is severe, a vitamin D deficiency is often diagnosed. The vitamin plays a role in almost every process in our body and performs important functions. Apparently it should also help in the fight against Corona.
The doctor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari (52) of the University Hospital of Zurich has been researching vitamin D for twenty years. She recently warned in BLICK that the Swiss population lacked important nutrients that support the body’s immune system. The doctor recommends taking vitamin D against the crown, a recommendation that has been proven by several new studies.
The vitamin enjoys a special position among vitamins. It can be produced by the body itself in the kidneys, for example, through exposure to sunlight. It is estimated that about half the population in northern latitudes is deficient in vitamin D in winter. The researchers explain the lower death rate in summer, among other things, with higher levels of vitamin D than in the winter months. In the longer term, the deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, making you more susceptible to inflammation, and apparently also triggering more severe courses of Covid 19 disease.

Vitamin D influences the course of Covid-19
An American study published in the Journal of Medical Virology evaluated studies in almost 1,400 patients. People with the worst Covid disease had significantly lower vitamin D levels than those with a good prognosis. The researchers emphasize that risk factors such as obesity, diabetes and age, which are often associated with low vitamin D content in the blood, also play a role.
Numerous other studies establish a connection between the deficiency of the “solar vitamin”, certain previous illnesses and a severe course of corona. A research team from the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain, shows that more than 80 percent of the patients treated had vitamin D deficiency. “The administration of vitamin D could have a positive effect on the course of the disease”, emphasizes the author of the study, José Hernández.
The Spanish University of Córdoba has also shown a direct connection between levels of vitamin D and Covid-19. From a group of 76 Covid patients treated at the hospital, 50 randomly selected people received calcifediol, a metabolite of vitamin D, in addition to standard therapy, which is converted into an active vitamin in the body. Of the people treated with Calcifediol, only one had to go to the intensive care unit and was subsequently discharged. In the other group, 13 patients had to be treated intensively. Two of them died.
Also adding “sun vitamin” to staples?
Doctors don’t want to talk about a miracle cure in the fight against the new lung disease. Vitamin D level is more of a good measure of how sick or healthy someone is. But prevention is better than cure. Professor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari from Zurich University Hospital suggests that the vitamin should be added to some staples, as in Norway, such as iodine in salt. Otherwise, general healthcare would not be so “cheap, simple and effective”.
His recommendation: take 20 micrograms of vitamin D a day. This amount is safe and does not harm people who are not vitamin D deficient. “And it possibly reduces the risk,” says Bischoff-Ferrari in the “NZZ,” “of contracting a severe Covid-19.”
