Christmas will definitely not be idyllic this year due to the corona pandemic. But at least the weather should play along and make the holidays a little more magical.
On the night of December 25, Switzerland expects a cold snap. “Before that, the days were too mild for snow on the plains,” Meteo News’s Michael Krucker tells BLICK.
Snow to the plains
But after Christmas Eve it is quite cold. The meteorologist also expects precipitation on the north side of the Alps. Krucker: “Both at night and on Christmas day, it could snow in the lowlands.”
At the moment, it is not possible to estimate how much it could snow and how long the snow will remain. “The weather is still very dynamic,” says Krucker. According to current forecasts, December 26 will be dry.
Mostly no snow at Christmas
A white Christmas is a rarity in Switzerland. Meteo Schweiz has been analyzing data on the holiday season since 1931. The result: On the central and eastern Swiss plateau, there was no snow on Christmas days 60 percent of the years.
In the west and northwest of Switzerland it even stayed green for 75 percent of the years. The situation is similar on the southern side of the Alps: Lugano has had no snow in 80 percent of the years. (ha)
