- Two climbers died and a companion was injured in two avalanche accidents in Switzerland today.
- In one case, the assistant alerted the rescue team, in the other, the skier was not involved.
A 20-year-old ski skier died in an avalanche on Mont Brûlé near Arolla in the canton of Valais. His 21-year-old partner suffered serious injuries.
According to the Valais cantonal police, the accident occurred when the two young men ascended Mont Brûlé from the north flank. A few meters below the summit (3,578 m above sea level), a rain of snow came off and dragged the two climbers.
Died in hospital
Other skiers who had seen the drama were able to free the two Valaisians from the snow at the foot of the north flank. They provided first aid to victims until emergency services arrived.
The two men were seriously injured and were transferred to hospital by customs. The younger of the two later died of his injuries at the hospital. His partner was in critical condition.
Mountaineer crashed
A mountaineer was also buried by an avalanche at Lauteraarhorn in the Bernese Oberland. The man could only be recovered dead.
A second climber remained unscathed, as announced by the regional prosecutor and the police of the Bernese canton. According to initial knowledge, the two climbers were descending the southern couloir toward the Strahlegg Glacier when the avalanche disappeared.
According to the police, one of the men was taken and buried. His partner alerted the emergency services.
