On Tuesday afternoon, shortly before 11:15 a.m., a 58-year-old man was struck by a tree in the forest area above Brand. He later died at the scene of the accident.
(pw / red) The 58-year-old man was busy logging the steep terrain with a second man. When a tree was felled, as St. Gallen canton police wrote in a press release, despite the support of a winch, it fell towards the 58-year-old man. He couldn’t get to safety in time, so he was hit by the tree trunk.
He suffered serious injuries. Despite immediate first aid and Rega’s call, the ER doctor had to abort the resuscitation without success and the man succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
Fatal logging accidents are rare
“Such accidents are relatively rare,” says Markus Rutz, a spokesman for the canton of St. Gallen police, when asked. Before that, there was a fatal logging accident in July 2016 and 2019.
