Hannes Baumann has been serving guests at his Bim Buume restaurant in Wikon for 30 years. But the innkeeper has never experienced what is currently happening in the catering sector. After Baumann had to close his pickle for weeks, he should be able to receive guests again from May 11. But the requirements for this are sobering: a maximum of four people per table and two meters between individual tables.
“With the requirements imposed by the federal government on innkeepers,” Baumann told regional broadcaster Tele M1, “I can’t open it.” So I can accommodate 12, 14 people. It is absolutely useless to me. It makes no sense for the longtime innkeeper to start again as long as one lives with so much uncertainty about the future. For example, if there is a second wave of infection and if people want to go back to the restaurant. For Baumann it is clear: he will close his restaurant forever.
Not a single reservation since the Federal Council decision
Chris van den Broeke, of the Zunfthaus zu Wirthen in Solothurn, also fears that no guests will go to his restaurant from May 11. That is why it will not open its doors either: the effort and costs would simply be too great. “Since the Federal Council ruled that restaurants can open again, we have not received a single reservation,” explains van den Broeke. However, the landlord wants to maintain its takeout service and delivery service.
GastroAargau, the Aargau Association for Hotels and Restaurants, currently knows of about 20 restaurants that will not open on May 11 despite Federal Council approval. All for the same reason: it just isn’t worth it. (luk)
