A letter from the doctor of the canton of Aargau, Yvonne Hummel, provokes red hair on Twitter. Because there is a shortage of staff in hospitals, employees who actually have to be in quarantine or even in isolation due to Corona must continue to work.
SP-Aargau President and National Councilor Gabriela Suter posted a screenshot of an email, writes the ‘Aargauer Zeitung’. “Well done,” Suter says.
The surgical mask and hand hygiene are sufficient.
“Due to the current situation in Corona, there is already a relevant staff shortage in individual cases and this is to be expected in the near future,” Hummel writes in the text.
That is why “reliefs” should be applied immediately that allow employees who have had contact with an infected person or who have tested positive for the coronavirus themselves to continue doing their job. Two conditions would apply:
First, employees must be symptom-free, and second, when in close contact with patients or colleagues (less than 1.5 meters), they must wear a surgical mask and strictly observe hand hygiene.
Lack of understanding spreads on Twitter. Well, Zack. Until you fall ”, comments one user. «With a broken nose to the hospital, with Covid at home. Great, ”writes another.
Otherwise, the departments would have to be closed
Compared to the ‘Aargauer Zeitung’, Hummel says: ‘If these contact persons continue to be quarantined, the medical and nursing services in many health institutions, such as hospitals and nursing homes, will no longer be able to support themselves. Entire departments should be closed and that should be avoided.
Apparently there is no risk. “Medical professionals are excellently trained and can protect themselves and their environment well.”
In private, caregivers must remain in quarantine
The cantonal doctor refers to the recommendations of the National Center for Infection Prevention. In a document dated October 23, recommendations are made for (supposedly) Covid-19 positive employees. Under the item “Relative shortage of personnel” it says: “If the general condition allows it (mild symptoms, no fever or cough), it is possible to continue working”. Even nurses who tested positive and do not feel ill can return to work after 48 hours of isolation.
Hummel emphasizes that quarantine relief only applies during work hours. In private, staff must continue to comply with the measures.
Harsh working conditions are a troublesome issue for the nursing staff themselves. A few days ago a week of protest began at the national level. They are still exhausted from the first corona wave and are finally calling for better working conditions and wage increases. (man)
