The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, police spokesman Adrian Gaugler confirmed to Telebasel. The highway is closed in both directions until at least 7 p.m. Traffic will be diverted locally, resulting in significant traffic obstructions.

According to the findings of the Basel-Landschaft police, a 47-year-old truck driver was driving his vehicle on the A2 motorway towards Basel. For reasons that have not yet been fully clarified, he collided head-on at the Zunzgen BL level with the rear of a truck driving ahead. This vehicle was pushed into the center crash barrier, crossed it, and finally came to a stop in the opposite lane.
Two people were seriously injured in the collision. A seriously injured person was flown to a hospital in a Rega helicopter after initial treatment. In order to clarify the exact cause and the course of the accident, the Basel-Landschaft police have launched a corresponding investigation. Further clarification is underway.
