After heavy snowfall in Japan, the occupants of about 1,000 cars spent a night on the road. The cars initially got stuck on Friday, as announced by the highway operator.
The emergency services provided blankets, food, gasoline and portable toilets to the people in the cars. Since the day before, they have been trapped on the Kan-Etsu Highway, which connects the snowy Niigata province on the Sea of Japan with the capital Tokyo. Soldiers from the Self-Defense Forces were deployed in the region.
Captured by a cold snap
With snow plows and other vehicles, the emergency services went to the specially affected sections of the highway. Police officers continued to try to divert the vehicles onto other routes. However, hundreds of cars were still stuck on Friday afternoon (local time).
