It is decided: members of the St. Gallen government have divided their future tasks or departments among themselves.
The result of the departmental distribution was eagerly awaited. But patience was required on Tuesday. The media orientation convened after the constituent meeting should have started at 11:45 a.m. at the Pfalzkeller. However, it was delayed an hour. Members of the new St.Gallen government did not appear in the media until around 12:45 p.m. In addition to the changes already known in the departments of health, finance and home affairs, there are also changes in the departments of economy and construction.
And here’s what the new St.Gallen government departmental layout looks like:
Laura Bucher (SP, new): Department of the Interior
The St. Gallen government councilor, Laura Bucher (SP), who was recently elected in the second vote in April, will in future be the head of the interior department and will therefore replace Martin Klöti, who will resign.
Susanne Hartmann (CVP, New): Construction Department
In contrast to Laura Bucher, CVP woman Susanne Hartmann made the election to the St. Gallen government councilman on the first try. As Wil’s longtime mayor, the attorney is experienced in budgeting. She becomes head of the construction department and therefore replaces Marc Mächler.
Beat Tinner (FDP, new): Department of Economic Affairs
FDP man and economist Beat Tinner, who along with Laura Bucher (SP) was also elected to the St.Gallen government in the second vote, will head the Department of Economic Affairs in the future. It is the successor of Bruno Damann, who will move to the health department. Tinner is completely satisfied with the decision. “I see many points of contact with my work today as mayor, as president of the interest group for public transport (IGöV) or biodiversity.” But there are also challenges ahead, especially now due to the crown crisis. For example, in relation to short-term work or unemployment. However: “I find the thematic range in my department very exciting.”
Fredy Fässler (SP, formerly): Department of Security and Justice
There are no changes in the security and justice department. SP man Fredy Fässler is obviously comfortable in his office and will continue to be Director of Justice for the next four years.
Stefan Kölliker (SVP, so far): Department of Education
The situation remained the same for Stefan Kölliker. The SVP man is the oldest and has been in the same office for 12 years. He will continue to be head of the education department for the next four years.
Bruno Damann (CVP, so far): Department of Health
Bruno Damann (CVP) will take over the health department in the future. The doctor and general practitioner come from the field and, after four years of service, turn over the Department of Economics to beat Tinner (FDP). “As a doctor, I knew from the beginning that I would be eligible for the health department,” says Damann when asked. However, he has two souls on his chest. “I was happy in the Department of Economic Affairs. But now I am happy to face the exciting challenge in the health department. Damann goes on to say that at the age of 63, however, he had an expiration date and therefore would remain in the St. Gallen government for a maximum of four years.
Marc Mächler (FDP, so far): Finance Department
The work of FDP politician Marc Mächler is also changing. The head of the construction department changes and becomes the new head of finance. Mächler takes over from Benedikt Würth (CVP). Mächler says: “The financial department had been a problem for me four years ago. At that time, as a new member of the government, I felt it was too early for me. His experience in the construction department was interesting, he was able to get information about some new areas. At today’s meeting, members of the new government intensely discussed which department each contributed best to their background. “As a former banker, I don’t just have a well-packed backpack that I can use. I also served on the Finance Commission of the St. Gallen Cantonal Council for many years.
