Just a few days ago, Google reported that the Google Meet service (formerly Hangouts Meet), which is actually provided for business and educational users of G Suite, should also be free for all other users in the future, even if there is one or two restrictions should. Now, however, early users report that they have been offered a button in the left sidebar of Gmail to start a Google Meet video call directly from there. Google Meet has one or another security feature that Zoom, the current leader in the field, lacks among others. This includes that you cannot join a Meet session without an existing Google account. Also, the initiator of the video call must have invited you, otherwise you will first be redirected to a type of wait loop from which the host can add it manually. Also, the free version of Meet will not have dial-up numbers from the landline for Meet calls.
