Mr. and Mrs. Swiss fear the negative effects of the Corona crisis on their wallets. This also influences the planning of your life situation, as the surveys show.

The proportion of people who want to buy residential property has decreased since the pandemic broke out. That was the result of two surveys released Monday by Swiss mortgage broker Moneypark. One was carried out before the outbreak, the second after the outbreak of the crown pandemic, according to a statement.

Specifically, in April 2020, more than half (57 percent) of tenants stated that they were interested in buying a home. However, in December 2019, their participation was still around 70 percent. Lower-income tenants, in particular, have been shown to initially refrain from buying their own home, he said.

The study authors see reasons for this as fear of longer-term short-term work, unemployment, and financial loss. Previous owners, on the other hand, who already wanted to buy before Corona, now often stick to their purchase plans, he said. The following applies: the higher the household income, the shorter they wanted to buy a new property.

Most volatile tenant market

Moneypark also surveyed the range of residential properties in Switzerland. This has decreased slightly in the last two months (-2.3 percent). The domestic market is more stable and less volatile than the tenant market, he said. Because the number of rental property listings had decreased by almost 17 percent in the same period.

Regarding prices, the Corona crisis has not yet had a demonstrable impact on the real estate sector. If the crown crisis persists and the economy slides into a longer recession with high unemployment, major price corrections could be triggered.
