It is the deadline in international soccer: the soccer players’ contracts end on June 30. But that day the championships in most European leagues are still going on, in many, including the Super League, you enter the heat phase.
This gives mega-zoff to all world soccer. FIFA has issued a directive that contracts must apply until the end of the season. This means that expiring contracts must be extended from one to a maximum of two months, and the global association expects this to “be true worldwide.”
But it’s not that simple. Because there is resistance everywhere. Especially in the Super League. According to BLICK information, the league had an expert opinion drawn up to clarify contractual situations. Because it seems clear: a FIFA recommendation cannot be above Swiss labor law. And some clubs take the position that they only have to renew the contracts they want. On the contrary, it is the player’s right not to accept the forced extension of the contract.
It can be well illustrated by the example of FC Basel. High-income contracts Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Ricky van Wolfswinkel expire there. If you let them go, FC Basel saves CHF 250,000 per month. Reasonable from the club’s perspective, because you will hardly need them for sport anymore.
What’s wrong with Hoarau?
On the other side is Kevin Bua, whose contract with FC Basel expires and who is facing a free transfer to Greek record champion Olympiacos Piraeus. There he could probably earn much more than at FCB: Greece talks about 600,000 francs a year. Unless Bua doesn’t want to stay on the knee of the Rhine for a month or two, no one can legally prevent him from going to Greece on July 1.
Then there are the loan players. For example, FC Basel has loaned Julian de Moos to Wil. If the owner’s club wants to bring it back, it could do so on July 1. Basically, however, the practice in Switzerland will be for the borrowed player to end his season where he is.
The contracts of high-income individuals Guillaume Hoarau and Miralem Sulejmani also expire at Meister YB and they are also expected to earn more than CHF 100,000 per month. However, one is likely to stretch out both out of gratitude for its merits and sporting criteria, at least until the end of the season.
However, disputes threaten everywhere, at least if an amicable settlement is not reached.
Fifa writes: “Player contracts that expire generally end at the end of the season. Since the game has stopped in most countries, the current season does not end as originally supposed. For this reason, contracts should run until the effective end of the season. “
League CEO Claudius Schäfer, himself a lawyer, tells BLICK: “FIFA has recommended that contracts be extended until the end of the season. We have had a legal opinion prepared for this. The result is clear: it is a recommendation, Swiss law is above the advice of FIFA. This means that clubs cannot be forced to renew contracts. By contrast, players don’t have to extend if they don’t want to. What we just don’t want is for you to switch within the same league and then play the last few games for another club. Therefore, the transfer window must also be adjusted. »
FIFA word of power?
Christoph Graf, President of the Swiss Association of Players’ Agents (SFAA): “I think FIFA will speak a word of power and regulate it clearly. That she decides not to qualify the players for new clubs until the end of each championship. Because if newcomers intervened in the finals, this would distort the championship. But I think it is difficult to force clubs to renew contracts against their will. Because FIFA can hardly face national labor law. “
