Trump spokeswoman’s first press conference in more than a year
For the first time in more than a year, a spokesperson for the President of the United States, Donald Trump, will again face journalists in the meeting room of the White House. The White House said Kayleigh McEnany would hold a press conference in the meeting room on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (local time / 8:00 p.m. CEST).
On her Twitter account as White House press secretary, McEnany also posted a tweet from a CBS correspondent, in which she wrote that she was looking forward to the return of formal press conferences at the US government headquarters. USA Trump’s own press conferences on the Corona crisis had been criticized.
Traditionally, White House spokespeople regularly answered questions from journalists in the meeting room. However, Trump’s penultimate spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, ended this practice. Sanders’ last brief press conference in the White House meeting room took place, after a long pause, on March 11, 2020. Sanders announced his resignation as a spokesman in June last year. Her successor, Stephanie Grisham, was in office for less than a year and did not hold a single press conference at the White House during this time. She has now returned to her previous position as spokesperson for First Lady Melania Trump.
McEnany took over as White House spokesperson in April. She was previously the spokesperson for the Trump campaign team, which ran for a second term in the November presidential election. Since the start of the Corona crisis, Trump has held press conferences almost every day. The American media reported that the consultants discouraged these appearances because they damaged his image.
