Bigger, longer, more emotional: this is how Openairs 2021 should continue

The main Swiss festivals are already looking towards 2021 after the cancellation of Corona. The Frauenfeld is extending the edition for a day, the Gurten announces a “super emotional festival”. But there is great sadness in anticipation.

Not only are many festival fans sad. The Corona Openair ban strikes hard at major Swiss festivals. The organizers do not lower their heads. Longer, bigger, more emotional: Organizers are planning the “Best Festivals of All Time” in 2021.

Belt festival

Gurtenfestival boss Simon Haldemann feels a great emptiness. “For the first time in over 20 years, I will not be spending the summer at the Gurten. The music industry is now practically banned from working. That makes me sad, ”says the 47-year-old from Bern to Watson.

A little consolation: all Gurten fans can look forward to a very special edition of Gurten 2021. “It will be a super festival full of emotions. And it will surely bring some surprises, “says Haldemann. Will the festival, like the Frauenfeld, last one day? The Gurten manager still doesn’t want to venture into the branches. Because the belt had been shaking for four days.

Gurten fans must donate

Gurten’s team worked at Festival 2020 for over a year. A first damage analysis shows that the preparations for the reserve, etc., cost 1.5 million Swiss francs. Now there is loss of profit. Cancellation will not break our neck. The Gurten Festival will re-emerge in 2021, ”says Haldemann. The costs incurred will only be partially offset by reservations. Therefore, they will request compensation from the canton. And we hope the support of the sponsors and the faithful visitors of the Gurtenfestival. “We pay 90 percent of the ticket price. But if you want, you can donate part of it.

In contrast to Openair St. Gallen or Frauenfeld, the Gurtenfestival AG does not have a large group behind. Is there even a sale under discussion? “It is not an option. We are and will continue to be an owner-managed company in Bern that has to generate all the income for the year in 92 hours every year, ”says the head of Gurten.

Openair St. Gallen (OASG)

OASG Director Christoph Huber experiences hectic days. After the Federal Council decision, one knows what the fact is and is relieved that planning for 2021 can begin. But the emotions are great. I have been in Sittertobel every weekend in late June for 30 years and I can’t imagine being home in late June, ”he tells FM1.

Visitors should already look forward to the 2021 edition. “We are planning many innovations, such as the dance of the day or the newcomer stage. We will make the 2021 edition the best outdoors, ”he continues to the online portal.

Since January, German ticketing giant Eventim has had a 60 percent stake in the company behind Openair St. Gallen. Is the festival’s existence still in danger? “The situation is not easy, but we are sure that we will find the way.” Even a multi on the back obviously doesn’t guarantee survival. Eventim’s share price has plummeted due to Corona, because the ticket company is losing a lot of money due to numerous cancellations.

Openair Frauenfeld

After the cancellation, Switzerland’s largest hip-hop festival goes on the offensive. Frauenfeld’s managers announced yesterday that they would extend the 2021 edition from one to four days. Tickets already purchased can be exchanged for the 2021 edition.

“Another closure is not feasible”

In view of the far-reaching facilitation steps, epidemiology professor Marcel Salathé of “Task Force Covid-19” is fighting for faster data processing and calls on the cantons to organize social tracking. A conversation about commitment, communication and children.

Mr. Salathé, how are you? Marcel Salathé: well, thanks. You?

Medium well why

Because the Federal Council wants to loosen the closure measures very quickly and I have doubts about whether we are sufficiently prepared. How do you see that? In the fight for compromise between health protection and the protection of the economy, in the fight for restrictive and far-reaching opening practices, something has clearly leaned this week, so be it. It goes very fast towards …
