  • Another flood of water disrupted rail traffic in Lötschberg for hours on Thursday.
  • The east tunnel of the base tunnel was closed.
  • Specialists had to move to clean up.

Water and mud entered the tunnel at the known location, BLS spokeswoman Tamara Traxler told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. Therefore, the eastern tube of the tunnel was closed in the morning. It was released shortly after 3 p.m., according to rail traffic information.

The Lötschberg base tunnel was only passable again from April 22.

The east tube in the double track section of the tunnel had previously been closed from the water and sand inlet on March 13. And already on February 6 there was water and sand in the same place in the double track section between Ferden and St. German.

To secure the position in the medium term, the BLS has installed steel settling tanks. She monitors the site with cameras and there are regular inspection visits.

The BLS plans to develop long-term measures by fall 2020: the ingress of water and sand must be managed without affecting rail traffic.
