If sheet metal damage brings luck, Jan-Marten Block can look forward to a great race. He is the new “superstar”, he won the DSDS final. That was so unexpected to him that he immediately disassembled the cup into its individual parts while lifting the winner’s cup. He could easily pay for the repair with the victory bonus (100,000 euros).
“Giants” becomes the trend-setting opening. The “fantastic four” of the final sing it together and show what everyone hears: they are true vocal giants. After Jan-Marten Block, Karl Jeroboan, Kevin Jennewein and Starian McCoy began, the jury with Maite Kelly, Thomas Gottschalk and Mike Singer were left speechless for the first time with enthusiasm.
Before the final, there was a mocking battle between Thomas Gottschalk and Dieter Bohlen. “Dieter is history, I am a legend,” replied Gottschalk’s advice (70) Dieters (67) (“Thomas advertises headphones. Can you judge the music with a hearing aid?”). On the show, Gottschalk adds: “Dieter sits at the Malle and orders his Camp David jerseys.”

Starian’s father André, Karl’s fiancée Jennifer, Kevin’s twin brother Timo, and Jan-Marten’s girlfriend Yasmin arrive and tears flow immediately.
The rules are simple: each finalist sings three songs. First a new cover song. Starian begins with “Treat You Better” (Shawn Mendes). Maite praises the “cool acting”. Thomas Gottschalk likes: “You don’t put on a show, you are honest, you are real.” Gottschalk says of the song: “It wasn’t really demanding, you can do a lot more.”
Kevin is happy to finally be in the final. Sing “Locked Out Of Heaven” (Bruno Mars). After that, you are satisfied. “It worked, even if I’m a rotisserie chicken.” Because right in front of him on stage a sea of flames burned. Maite praises: “You are starting to become a great singer. You have always been one of the leading cover singers.”
When Karl reveals his first song (“Way Down We Go” by Kaleo), Thomas Gottschalk sighs audibly. And he is the first to celebrate Karl with a standing ovation. “You gave the song soul. Great!” Mike is also “incredibly dazzled”: “You hit my heart right away.” Maite: “You have always been great. And you have surpassed yourself again.”
“It doesn’t get under your skin, it goes straight to your soul,” announces Oli Geissen Jan-Marten. Rightly so, because the North Frisian provides the first “magic moment” with “Bruises” (Lewis Capaldi). Gottschalk: “You won’t forget it, whatever happens today.” Mike has “goose bumps everywhere” and Maite just breathes: “Exceptional!”
Starian begins the second round: the favorite songs of the retreat are presented. Starin sings “Perfect” (Ed Sheeran) and shakes Maite (Gottschalk: “She crossed her hands”): “Someone who should own the stage needs three things: heart, talent and social strength. You have it all.” Gottschalk agrees: “Really great people don’t have airs.”
Kevin delivers a really great movie theater with “Breath Easy” (Blue). “That was world class!” Says Mike. Maite is stunned: “This is a 3.5 octave song. The four of Blue couldn’t handle it like you did on your own.” She raves: “I’ve never seen you with such star appeal. That was a roller coaster of a song, and you mastered it!”
“I heard the first note and immediately: headshot!” Oli Geissen is impressed by Karl’s “The World of Man” (James Brown). Mike too: “You got the gold Dieter CD, that has something to say.” Thomas Gottschalk also praises: “You can’t do better. James Brown would be proud too.” Maite: “I was deeply moved.”
“The song fits like the ass in a bucket,” says Oli Geissen to Jan-Martens “Human” (Rag ‘n’ Bone Man). Maite thinks: “Crazy! You master the depths like no other.” Thomas Gottschalk sees Jan-Marten “in a truck” and musically in the field. Mike wants to say something too, but Oli Geissen strangles him. Advertising calls.
The camouflage outfit (Gottschalk: “I once had a sleeping bag”) takes some getting used to, the “winning song” written for Starian, no: “Hold Me” is one of the best ballads Starian celebrates with fervor. So strong that you are overwhelmed by emotions. “I love you, you are my brothers,” he sobs to his three comrades in arms.
Kevin’s “Hurricane” is a fast-paced number based on Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars, a good mood song set to Fox’s beat. “You felt the song,” says Mike, “it was great energy.” Maite thinks the song fits “like a fist in the eye.” Many fans of Kevin on the internet see him differently. “That was not so good,” they say.
“This is the perfect song for me,” says Karl of “Where We Were.” He identifies with the lyrics, sings the song to his mother, whom he has not seen for ten years. Thomas praises “You did a great job”, and Maite thinks, “That was the hardest song today. But ‘Karl, der Grosse’ dominated it.” Mike: “You got me completely!”
Jan-Martens “Never Not Try” is an absolute chart. The mix of Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and Boss Hoss hits the mark. Mike claps: “You are a rock star.” Gottschalk is an immediate fan: “I know a hit when I listen to it. The song plays. Whatever happens, I listen to it on my radio show.”
Before it can get embarrassing, the notary shakes the result. The “fantastic four” take the stage with eager anticipation, the jury is not even asked about their assessment, Ramón has decided to keep silent. He was named “Superstar” 364 days ago. Who will be his successor? Is …
… “Jan-Marten is the superstar of 2021!” – He can hardly believe it, he’s really in awe. But then I was very happy. Through his cheering colleagues, he turns to his girlfriend Yasmin. She sobbed “I’m so happy for him!” On Starian’s father’s shoulder. and falls around her neck as she kisses her “teddy bear”.
Jan-Marten wins 100,000 euros, a record contract and the title of “Superstar”. And the cup. But first you have to repair it, because it breaks immediately when animating. “We will solder the thing again,” says Oli Geissen. Jan-Marten sings her winning song again in the witching hour, and DSDS season 18 is history.
