Jean-Pierre Adams was considered one of France’s most talented defenders in the 1970s. Born in Dakar, Senegal, Adams came to France with his family at age 10, where he began his football career. In 1970, the then 22-year-old made his Ligue 1 debut in Nîmes, and 7 years later he moved to PSG via Nice in the capital. Adams celebrates 22 appearances for the France national team and, together with defender legend Marius Trésor, formed a prominent central defender duo.
In 1981, Adams hung up his soccer shoes. What follows is a tragic story.
Incorrect dose of anesthetic
A year after the end of his career, the defender underwent surgery in a Lyon hospital for a knee ligament injury. A routine operation: Adams should be able to leave the clinic after a few days, but things turned out differently: As a result of an incorrect dose of the anesthetic, the then 34-year-old suffered bronchospasm. The muscles that encompassed his airways tensed. His brain has been deprived of oxygen. Adams fell into a coma. And he hasn’t woken up since.
His wife Bernadette has been babysitting him bedside for 39 years. Although her husband cannot communicate, he can breathe, eat and drink without the help of medical equipment. Bernadette continues to hope that her husband will one day wake up from the vegetative state: “I don’t have the courage to refuse him food and water.”
His former defense partner Marius Trésor also pronounces himself according to the “Sun”: “Even if Jean-Pierre woke up, he would not recognize anyone. So is it worth living like this? And also: “If something similar happened to me, I told my wife not to leave me here.” So far, Trésor has not been able to dare to visit his former partner.
The anesthetist who gave the former soccer player the wrong dose was found guilty in 1990, eight years after the incident, and sentenced to one month of probation and a $ 815 fine. (Red)
