Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin (35) wants to impose a blockade on the capital, Helsinki. She announced a bill on Wednesday that would only allow residents of Helsinki and the city of Turku, in the southwestern United States, to leave their homes to shop, go to school or to the doctor. The text could be presented to Parliament on Thursday.
The plan is to impose the closure in mid-May. The use of mouth and nose protection would also be mandatory in public transport. The police could monitor people’s movements and impose fines for violations. These measures are “absolutely necessary” to reduce the burden on hospitals, Marín told Yle broadcaster.
Relatively more new cases than in the UK
Until recently, the Nordic country had received praise for its handling of the pandemic. Finland, with a population of 5.5 million, had one of the lowest Covid-19 incidence rates in all of Europe, in part due to low population density and compliance with crown standards by the Finns.
Finland has recorded 73,516 corona cases since the start of the pandemic. 811 people died as a result of the infectious disease. However, recently, the number of infections has increased considerably. In the last two weeks, the authorities registered 172 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than in Spain, the United Kingdom and Ireland. (SDA / noo)
