Call for anti-corona demonstration in Altdorf: up to 10,000 participants expected on April 10
The next demonstration against the crown measures will be held in the canton of Uri. Organizers say there is room for up to 10,000 people. Talks are continuing with the Uri canton police. A permit is still pending.
Will the canton of Uri set the record for the largest demonstration against the crown measures on Saturday, April 10? At least the alliance of the original cantons is planning a mass demonstration. “We have space for 10,000 people,” says the corresponding flyer. The motto: «No more Corona emergency law. No to the Covid-19 law! “The event will take place in the private area of a farm in Altdorf on Grenzgasse 8. on a meadow.
Mask requirement was not met at Liestal
10,000 participants would actually be a Swiss record. The largest event against the crown measures to date featured around 6,000 protesters. This took place last Saturday in the Liestal valley in Basel. Since then, the rally has been criticized. Because many participants ignored the most important requirement, the use of protective masks. The Basel police, supported by colleagues from Zurich, were on duty. The security forces did not deliberately intervene. A silent process had priority, it is said later.
However, the Basel security directorate strongly condemned the organizers’ behavior in hindsight: They had shown no effort to enforce the requirement to wear masks. The Uri canton police have also been closely monitoring the situation in Liestal. “The events and findings have already been included in Altdorf’s pending approval process,” says police spokesman Gusti Planzer upon request.
According to police law, a permit is required.
It is not yet clear whether the Altdorf rally will be approved. “We are currently in contact with the organizers,” says Planzer. Ideally, you want to make a final decision as soon as possible. Because although the rally will take place in a private area, the canton needs a green light. Planzer cites article 65 of the Police Law: “If public peace, order and security could be affected, the authorization of the competent authority is required.” And it is obvious that an event that involves several thousand people has an impact.
According to Planzer, the rally could also take place under certain regulations. There are requirements for the demonstrations, for example, on the number of participants, the infrastructure, the traffic and parking situation or the Covid-19 rules. The previous experiences that Kapo Uri had with the crown protesters also flow into the current assessment. The conclusion of the recent rally on January 9 in Altdorf is positive. “Everything went smoothly and well,” says Planzer. At that time, about 220 participants were counted.
On the other hand, there were problems with the demonstration approved last fall on Saturday September 5 with 350 people. “The demonstration as such was calm and peaceful,” says Planzer. “Most of the participants, however, did not wear masks and the minimum distances were not met.” Calls for self-discipline have been ignored. As a result, there was a complaint for non-compliance with the conditions of the permit.
Organizer: “We definitely have several thousand”
Well-known people are going to speak at the planned rally on April 10. Among others, the satirist Andreas Thiel or Nicolas A. Rimoldi, co-president of the youth movement Mass-Voll. Members of the association marched with the large demonstrations in Chur and Liestal. But are there really thousands of participants in the Altdorf rally? “We definitely have several thousand,” says Josef Ender, spokesman for the Urkanton Action Alliance. “More and more people are realizing how disproportionate the measures are.” He laughs and says, “How many come exactly depends on the weather.”
Due to the large number of participants expected, they want to hold the event in one place: “It would be too tight for a march.” Ender assures that the organizers indicate the requirement of the mask, for people without medical certificate. Don’t expect violent protesters. “We also have our own security watching him.” From 500 to 600 parking spaces are available directly on site. According to the organizer, there are more in other meadows if necessary. However, the action alliance notes that, if possible, public transportation should be used for the event.
