The London appeals court confirmed on Friday the High Court’s earlier decision that measures to prolong the girl’s life must be terminated.
He also opined that it was “in Pippa’s best interest to end the life support measures,” the appellate judge wrote in a written judgment. The 41-year-old mother announced that she would go to Britain’s highest court, the Supreme Court.
Five-year-old Pippa has been in a London hospital for about two years with severe brain damage. In January 2019, the girl fell ill: a flu illness caused serious damage to the brain, the so-called acute necrotizing encephalopathy. Doctors are hopeless and want to end life support measures, but the mother takes legal action against her.
The Superior Court verdict in January said the case was “heartbreaking.” However, Pippa cannot perceive her surroundings or interactions with other people. Therefore, it is not advisable to move home with special equipment, as requested by the mother.
“I am devastated again after today’s appeals court ruling,” said Pippa’s mother, who still does not want to back down in the legal battle. You want to at least implement a trial phase where you can take care of your daughter at home with mobile devices. She is convinced that Pippa is doing better at home than at the hospital.
The case is similar to other cases in Britain: little Charlie Gard died at the age of eleven months, as did Alfie Evans, who was only 23 months old. Both children had a rare genetic defect. In both cases, even the Pope intervened to get the British judiciary to accept treatment abroad, but to no avail.
