- Andri Ragettli wins the gold medal in slopestyle at the Freestyle World Championships in Aspen.
- The Freeskier from Graubünden keeps the competition at bay with a fantastic final race.
- Mathilde Gremaud won silver at the Women’s World Cup.
In the end, the tension was almost unbearable. Andri Ragettli was leading the way at the finish when Alexander Hall was the last athlete to conjure up another great race in the snow. To the Swiss it must have seemed hours before the decision was finally made: gold for Ragettli, bronze for Hall. “I feel great,” the newly crowned world champion struggled to find the words.
Full attack in the last round
Ragettli was already in the silver field after the second round, but that was not enough for the 22-year-old.
“I knew I could still improve my second lane. I wanted to attack Colby, ”Ragettli said. Thanks to a fantastic race, which was rewarded with 90.65 points, the Flims driver overtook the American Colby Stevenson, who until that moment had been leading.
Kim Gubser, the second Swiss in the slopestyle final, scored even better in the final round and came in fifth.
Gremaud with the first medal of the world championship
In the women’s category, Mathilde Gremaud secured the World Cup silver medal. The 21-year-old showed a solid second career and was only beaten by Eileen Gu in the end. The only 17-year-old Chinese had already triumphed in the halfpipe competition on Friday.
In the end, Gremaud scored 77.15 points and distanced third-placed Canadian Megan Oldham by just under one point. With 84.23 points, Gu was one of a kind.
Experience in large events
For Gremaud it is the first medal of a World Championship. The Freiburg native won silver in slopestyle at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. At the X-Games, Gremaud triumphed three times in Big Air. Her teammate and Olympic champion Sarah Höfflin fell during training and missed the competition.
