- Liverpool win the second leg of the round of 16 in Budapest against RB Leipzig 2-0.
- Both goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané fall late.
- In the second game of the afternoon, PSG against Barcelona was enough to qualify for the quarterfinals 1-1.
The gaps in Leipzig’s defense were not reduced in the second leg in Budapest. The fact that Liverpool only scored their first goal after more than an hour was mainly due to strong Peter Gulacsi on RB’s goal and a lack of opportunity evaluation.
From minute 70, everything went quickly: in 190 seconds, the pincers of Liverpool’s wings, which were no longer so lethal, made the decision. After a pass from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah danced his back completely overwhelmed by the outgoing sinner Dayot Upamecano and scored the 1-0.
Attacking partner Sadio Mané had to press shortly after after a good cross from Joker Divock Origi to make it 2-0. As Leipzig could no longer react to the setback, Liverpool can continue to hope, thanks to the quarter-finals, to judge the season so far unsuccessful with the “premier class”.
Thiagos Tiki-Taka, Unhappy Upamecano
Despite a 2-0 lead in the first leg, manager Jürgen Klopp’s team had been looking for the way forward from the start. Thiago got into an excellent finishing position after just 3 minutes on the edge of the box. But former Tiki-Taka trainee of Pep Guardiola chose the wrong option with the cross pass, Kevin Kampl rushed in the middle.
Then later scorers Salah and Mané missed several times on the standout Gulacsi. Shortly before the break, Jota, who was returning from the starting eleven, should have opened the scoring: after a failure by Upamecano, the Portuguese only hit outside the net from a few meters. After 90 minutes, the young Upamecano should have been especially happy that the ink on his Bayern contract is already dry.
Leipzig: hitting the bar as a highlight
Leipzig also had their moments on offense: Kampl, Emil Forsberg and Dani Olmo all failed in the first half due to LFC goalkeeper Alisson or their own inability. The closest to a goal was Alexander Sörloth, who was substituted at half-time and only hit the crossbar with his header (65th).
The Germans were back on duty a lot, especially in regards to Liverpool’s weakness in form, it would certainly have been more urgent. For the “Reds”, Xherdan Shaqiri had to watch for 90 minutes.
