The dispute between Australia and the EU is escalating. The focus is on Italy, which with the approval of the European Union is withholding 250,000 doses of vaccines from the manufacturer Astrazenca and, as agreed, does not deliver them to Australia (VIEW reported). Emotions are running high in Australia. There is talk of a vaccination scandal in the EU in the media. Now, the country’s trade minister has also spoken out and added fuel to the fire.
After the stoppage of the delivery of the corona vaccine, the Canberra government wants to pressure Brussels together with other countries to continue receiving the agreed doses. Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan (53) told ABC on Tuesday that it was “vaccination protectionism” on the part of the EU. He was “incredibly disappointed” with Italy’s decision to block the export of 250,000 doses of the Astrazeneca vaccine. There are concerns that the EU could delay future deliveries.
Australia plans to work with Canada, Japan, Norway and New Zealand to urge the EU to change its mind, Tehan said. “The more we can collectively pressure them, the more they will realize that what they are doing is wrong.”
“No hostile act against Australia”
Last week, Italy prevented the delivery of a quarter of a million doses of Astrazeneca vaccine to Australia and thus stopped the export of the corona vaccine from the European Union to a third country for the first time. The focus is on manufacturers that do not meet their EU delivery obligations. Astrazeneca falls short of the delivery volume originally promised to the EU in the first quarter, causing a lot of resentment.
“The whole affair is not a hostile act by Italy against Australia,” said Italian Chancellor Luigi Di Maio (34). The ban is part of an export control regulation adopted in Europe on January 30. France welcomed the move. “This shows that we as Europeans can not be naive and defend our interests,” said European Secretary of State Clément Beaune (39). (nim / SDA)
