The biggest illegal party since the start of the second wave: “Some guests tried to hide in the restaurant”
On Saturday night, the St. Gallen city police learned of the noise from the parties in the western city center. During an on-site inspection, the police found around 50 people taking part in an illegal act in a bar.
On Saturday night around 11:30 pm, the St. Gallen City Police received a noise complaint. When emergency services arrived at the restaurant in question in the center of the western city, they found about 50 people there who were celebrating an illegal party.
Roman Kohler, communication chief for the city of St. Gallen police, says it was the largest illegal party of its kind that city police had to break up since the second wave began.
“We have never known a restaurant with so many people.”
The last big illegal event was a birthday party with 21 guests, Kohler says.
Most of the party guests were quite young, “in their early twenties,” says Kohler. Some of them reportedly left the scene immediately when the police arrived.
“Some guests have hidden inside the restaurant to escape from the police.”
But the game of hide and seek was unsuccessful.
The city police have registered the personal data of a total of 28 people for violating the Covid 19 law, including those of the alleged organizers, Kohler says. The fact that a total of around 50 guests were present can be estimated based on the amount of clothing, seats and drinks around.
It is not yet clear whether public or private events
No fines have been distributed yet, Kohler says. It is not yet clear whether the party was a public or private event.
“Basically, we are assuming a public event because it took place in a pub,” says Kohler. But he admits that there are exceptional cases. More discussions would need to be held with the organizer to finally clarify the issue.
If it was a private event, the organizers and guests would get away with a fine of CHF 200 and CHF 100 respectively. However, if it turns out that it was a public party, the organizer is threatened with criminal charges.
