Manuel Battegay (60) has directed the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene at the University Hospital of Basel for almost 20 years. And he wants and will have more time for this job in the future.
On Saturday night, the Basel man announced on Twitter that next week he will step down as vice chairman of the Swiss Science Taskforce, which advises the Federal Council on fighting the corona pandemic.
“After 1 year I will focus more on clinical management and direct patient care,” writes infectologist Battegay.
And also: «My resignation has nothing to do with the discussion about the possibility of expressions inside / outside the working group. I will continue to work in committees at the cantonal and national level. “
Only in recent weeks has it been made public that WAK, the National Council’s economic commission, is calling for a muzzle for scientists. Only the Federal Council and Parliament should comment on the Crown’s actions.
Praise for the good cooperation
In another tweet, Battegay praised the good cooperation with politicians: “Thank you! to the Bundesratskollegium @Bundesrat_CH
and colleagues from @BAG_OFSP_UFSP for the great trust and good cooperation. “
Battegay comes from a family of doctors: his father was a chief doctor in Basel, one of his brothers worked as a chief doctor at the University Hospital in Zurich. Battegay is married with two children.
It was only announced at the end of February that Marcel Salathé would also be leaving the working group. (bö)
