Kuno Lauener (59) suffers from the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS). This is confirmed by the popular singer and lyricist of the Bernese rock group Züri West in an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”.
Lauener conducted the interview on the occasion of his upcoming 60th birthday on March 17. “I have shitty days, but I’m not desperate,” Lauener says. He had already received the diagnosis in July 2017. He first struggled with visual disturbances and dizziness. Then he visits the doctor.
The diagnosis – “multiple sclerosis: bang” – he received on July 14, 2017; on a day when the band was playing at the Gurten Festival. Lauener: “So that night I stood on this big stage at the Gurten, I forgot my lyrics, I saw everything twice, instead of 25,000 waiting there were 50,000 people, and I realized that I would not go to concerts like this in the future. . To be able to play. “
Three very difficult years
Since then, three very difficult years have passed. First the death of his mother and the diagnosis of MS. Then the separation from his partner, the mother of his children. A year ago, shortly before the crisis of the Crown, his father also died: “They got together a lot.”
The prognosis is difficult. There are moderate fields, but others are severely affected. Lauener: “I am glad that the disease has only caught me now and not before. And in the broad Bernese dialect: “But I don’t think twice.”
“Forget about everything the next morning”
The first symptoms are that sometimes one leg does not really want to, then again it has a “stormy routine” with head jumps. It could be that you worked on the lyrics for one day and forgot everything the next morning. On the other hand, he sleeps better today: “Because I got rid of the thought loops that used to keep me awake when my memory on the Grind was still working.”
So far, only close friends and family have been aware. But she realized that life with MS could be difficult, both privately and professionally. So he “decided to get rid of it publicly now. I had to bring clarity into my life first and I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me. Now it’s available, I’m happy about it and we can talk about something else. “
How things will go with Züri West is open and depends on the development of his illness. Despite the MS, he wrote new songs that he would like to record with the band. It remains to be seen if there will be live concerts in the future. The autoimmune disease MS affects the central nervous system and is considered incurable. (kes)
