YB in the round of 16! The Bernese also beat Leverkusen
For the first time in history, the Young Boys survived a knockout round in the Europa League. In the 4: 3 home win in Bern, YB followed up with a 2: 0 against the best Bundesliga team, Bayer Leverkusen, and is therefore in the round of 16.
National competitions have become a compulsory subject for Bernese in recent years. YB dominates the Super League at will, the fourth consecutive championship title is not only mathematically a fact at the end of February, the competition in the championship has long been flying the white flag. It was different for the Bernese so far in the European Cup, where the Bernese showed nervousness too often in knockout matches. In the second leg of the round of 16 in Leverkusen, the Bernese cleared up their European Cup problems.
As usual, Gerardo Seoane’s team presented itself well to the Bundesliga club, but it was also patient. When favorite Bayer took over the game after a ten-minute sampling phase, YB switched to his main task for this particular game: defensive stability. The guests, more designers than destroyers in nearly all of their games this season, showed no vanity in their defensive actions. When necessary, the balls flew somewhere in the orphan seats.
The appearance of Jordan Siebatcheu, representative of YB’s sanctioned top scorer Jean-Pierre Nsame, also coincided with the European Turf Masters examination. The 24-year-old Frenchman, already a 4: 3 first-leg winner with two goals for the Bernese, only appeared once at Bayarena when he scored 1-0 three minutes after the break. Siebatcheu nodded towards the important and lucrative goal as Bayer’s Niklas Lomb surprisingly dropped a deflected cross from Meschack Elia.

Siebatcheu also scored because he didn’t interrupt his run when Leverkusen’s own substitute goal set out to knock the supposedly harmless bow ball out of the air. Four minutes before the end, Christian Fassnacht made the decision with a counterattack against Lomb at 2-0.

The Bundesliga team defended with more skill and resolution in their own stadium than a week ago. Two corners were enough for YB in Wankdorf to make it 2-0, at Bayarena Michel Aebischer was able to try his hand at the corner kick three times in the first four minutes, this time it did not cause any discomfort in the local team .
The Bernese learned early in Leverkusen that only patience would lead to a coup. They did not lose their nerves in the final phase against the opponent who was throwing everything forward. The 2-0 of Fassnachts fell in the phase of greater dominance of the rival that threw everything forward. The great success of the Swiss champions could soon bring a first sacrifice: Several Bundesliga clubs are said to have found out about coach Gerardo Seoane in recent months. YB’s appearance at the European Cup in Leverkusen will not diminish interest in the 42-year-old.
