On Wednesday, the Federal Council will decide on the first steps to get out of the blockade. The Minister of Health of the SP, Alain Berset (48), proposes a cautious and gradual opening. The Health Commission of the National Council, for its part, is pressing, no later than March 22, so that catering companies or cultural, sports and leisure businesses can reopen practically in their entirety. Not only is the SVP pushing for a quick opening, FDP health politicians have also approved the proposals.
But now liberal progressives face strong criticism from within their own ranks. “If SGK-N consciously accepts a third wave, it acts irresponsibly and does not deserve its name,” Solothurn FDP National Councilor Kurt Fluri (65) tweeted.
Explain your displeasure to VIEW.
VISTA: Mr. Fluri, in your tweet you criticize the health commission. Why the problem?
Kurt Fluri: The commission does not care about people’s health. Instead, the economy should take precedence over health, even with a third wave. It cannot be that the Health Commission, of all people, sets such wrong priorities. It does not do justice to its function. With its demands it even exceeds the financial commission.
Representatives of the FDP are also pressing the accelerator. You are against your party.
That is not the opinion of the party or the parliamentary group. This will then be determined during the consultation on the Covid-19 Law. I’ll take my attitude there.
But the number of corona cases is declining.
Development is still dynamic. The predictions of medical experts are clear: variants of the mutated virus are rampant and the number of cases will rise again in the coming weeks. Especially if we loosen it up too soon. Now we need “gopferdeli” a little more patience! Just because we are fed up with Corona, we must not give up now, otherwise all efforts would be in vain. We should learn from experience.
Do you respond to the second wave?
I agree. We lost our patience too soon and became arrogant. Out of joy and nonchalance, we let it go for a long time and entered the second wave. We cannot repeat this mistake. Now we have to pull ourselves together again and hold out for a few weeks.
As President of the City of Solothurn and President of the City Association, you should have an interest in having restaurants and businesses reopen soon.
The key is the balance between health and economy. We have to think long-term so we don’t have to blame ourselves again in a month. The stupidest thing would be that if we relax too early and too much, we hit a third wave and have to shut everything down again. Then it becomes even more expensive for the economy. Now we have to speak more money for the affected companies, but for me it is worth it.
Don’t you see alternatives?
A complete opening of the stains on the interior is currently not an option, but an opening in the exterior areas at best. Cities are also called upon to make things easier: giving pickles more public space to sit, so that more distance can be kept between tables. And financially, waiving additional fees.
