Graubünden and Central Switzerland have allowed restaurants in their ski areas to open their terraces for take-out meals, and have been doing so for weeks. According to the operators, this has been shown to present no problems. The protection concepts would be fulfilled, it is said in unison.
This, of course, makes the ski areas attractive and also helps battered restaurateurs. Neighboring countries see it this way too: “Switzerland is doing better”, Austrian tourism experts confirmed in an interview with BLICK. They are jealous that the Confederates are more flexible here than the Austrian government.
But a dispute has broken out over open ski slopes. Because the federal government prohibits it. In recent days, he repeatedly pointed out to opposing cantons that only take-away offers were allowed on the edge of the slopes. Unsuccessfully.
Wallis increases pressure on the government
Now the Valais interferes on the Zoff terrace. The holiday canton, which is popular with winter sports enthusiasts, has so far adhered to the Federal Council ban. “I feel like in a banana republic”, says the leader of the government of Valais, Christophe Darbellay (49), in the “NZZ amSonntag”. Addressing the cantons of central Switzerland and Graubünden, he complains: “These businesses have been profiting on the slopes for two months, while our restaurants are making huge losses.”
The Valais now threatens to open the terrace. Darbellay demands that the Federal Council finally enforce the ban or allow terraces to be used in all cantons. If nothing changes for next Wednesday, the Valais would also allow the opening of the terraces in the ski areas. Furthermore, the head of government is demanding financial compensation from the federal government because the restorers of the Valais ski resort have lost good income so far.
Therefore, the Federal Council will have to deal with new opening steps in the ski areas next Wednesday and approve a decision. (aurochs)
