Loïc Meillard secures his first medal in a world championship. Neuchâtel came third in the combination at Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Meillard was 1.12 seconds behind Austrian Marco Schwarz in the final standings, who won the duel for gold against French favorite Alexis Pinturault by four hundredths. After the Super-G, Black was still three-tenths behind the defending champion.
Meillard blew the big shot for gold with a time-consuming midfield error. In the first division, he was 19 hundredths ahead of Black. Luca Aerni, who was also given the chance to get on the podium after Super-G, was eliminated in slalom, as was Gino Caviezel. Justin Murisier, the fourth Swiss participant, was seventh.
Black became a world champion for the first time. The Carinthian had already won World Cup medals in Are two years ago. In Sweden he was in the slalom, in which he is the most consistent and best in this winter’s World Cup, and he was third in the combination. He was a member of the ÖSV team, which won silver in the team competition. He had already won a combination at the World Cup, also two years ago in Wengen.
