The classification for this season of Corona is in the final stretch. The SCRJ has the opportunity to play the playoffs for the first time since 2008 (!). However, it has already been decided in Rapperswil-Jona that head coach Jeff Tomlinson’s contract will not be extended after this season. That comes a bit unexpected after continuity was underscored on Friday with various contract extensions from service providers.
Tomlinson took over the Lakers after their lowest point, relegation to the Swiss League in 2015. Since then, the Canadian has led the team successfully, he is the longest-serving coach in office. The 2017/18 season is the most impressive so far with the triple: Swiss League championship title, cup title and promotion to the National League.
Club ensures: Daily work is not affected
The Lakers struggled in their first National League season after being promoted again. In the spring of 2019 you only achieved league classification because SC Langenthal had withdrawn from it. At that time, doubts about Tomlinson first arose in the club’s leadership and they explored the coaching market, without informing him.
At the time, Managing Director Markus Bütler at BLICK said about the procedure: “We look at the market for coaches and players. It is a permanent task of the sports management to be aware of what is happening in the market ”.
Has it gone the same way now? Because for at least two weeks it has been clear that assistant coach Niklas Gällstedt (54, Sd) will switch to EV Zug next season. The SCRJ, of course, is looking for a replacement for him. And now also for head coach Tomlinson.
In its statement, the club stated: “(…) This decision will not affect reaching the pre-playoffs as a joint goal, or daily work on the ice. Tomlinson will finish the season alongside his coaching staff as planned and he remains hungry and motivated to do his best with the team. (…) »
