More campers, but fewer vacation trips. Many more electric cars and plug-in hybrids, but significantly fewer new cars overall. The crown crisis changed all of last year, including our mobility behavior.
A study by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) with the participation of eight European car clubs, including the TCS, has compiled figures.
“Balcones” as a travel destination
Not all is surprising, for example that in 2020, for example, 33 percent of respondents were only on vacation “balconies” rather than the year before. Not even 44 instead of 25 percent of those who left stayed in Switzerland and only 0.6 instead of 12 percent were on vacation outside of Europe.
It’s more astonishing how air traffic collapsed immensely: According to the survey, only 7 percent of those who traveled did so by plane instead of 32 percent the year before. The car, which is the preferred option for the holidays, grew even more: 46 percent instead of 36 percent use their own vehicle (across Europe this was 84 percent instead of 66 percent).
Better go to work in the car
Unexpectedly, however, he is robbing trains and company on the way to work. In figures: according to the study, the proportion of public transport used to get around in Switzerland fell from 29 to 18 percent. In 2020, compared to 2019, 61 percent instead of 57 percent took an individual mode of transportation, including 46 percent instead of 44 percent in this country, according to its own statement, mainly the car. And yes, bicycle and pedestrian traffic also increased: the share of bicycle traffic in all trips increased in 2020 to 2019 from 5.7 to 7.0 percent, and pedestrian traffic from 5.5 to 6.4 percent.
Switzerland remains champion of public transport
Does this jeopardize Switzerland’s position as the country with the highest percentage of train travel in Europe? Not that, after all, the virus scared people off trains across the continent. In Switzerland, the 2020 survey shows an 18 percent share of commuting, across Europe just 4 percent.
